Your Guide to the Upper Amman Valley
Beautiful views and a fascinating history greet visitors to the
Upper Amman Valley, the most western of the five valleys of Neath
Port Talbot, situated near the southern fringe of the Brecon
Beacons National Park.
With welcoming villages and Welsh communities, the Upper Amman
Valley’s earliest mention was in the ancient Mabinogion Folk Tales.
It came to greater prominence during its long and colourful history
as a centre for the mining of high quality anthracite coal and
metal-working. Following the closure of its coal mines over recent
decades, nature has been gently reclaiming the Upper Amman
Valley.
Throughout these changes, the Welsh welcome remains as warm as
ever in an area in which the Welsh language and culture are a part
of everyday life. The Upper Amman Valley is a very special place to
visit – providing an experience which feels so far away from the
hustle and bustle of life in the big towns.
